Qld: Councils free to hold referendums after law reversed

Queensland councils who hold referendums on boundary reforms will no longer face the
sack .. after the state government removed a controversial amendment to its merger laws.

In a major backdown .. Local Government Minister ANDREW FRASER has introduced a bill
into parliament that stops councils from undertaking federally-funded polls on the issue.

The amendment had sparked widespread outrage .. and Premier PETER BEATTIE admits he stuffed up.

At one stage .. JOHN HOWARD had threatened to override the legislation.
